Staten Island has always been a stronghold for former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Friday morning seniors at the Arrochar Friendship Club showed he’s still popular with them.

“It’s great to be here today, and I’ve always admired Rudy Giuliani,” said resident Maria Mobilia.

Giuliani visited two senior centers on behalf of Borough President James Molinaro, Mid-Island Councilman James Oddo and South Shore Councilman Vincent Ignizio, who are all running for re-election. The former mayor, who is wildly popular in the borough, encouraged seniors to vote for the trio because he says they’ve continued what he called the “good work” that began he was mayor and Guy Molinari was borough president.

Molinaro and Oddo have been criticized for running for a third term after Mayor Bloomberg extended term limits, but Giuliani disagrees with the nay-sayers.

“I think a third term for people who understand Staten Island, were there at the beginning with Guy Molinari, and all the changes that were made to turn Staten Island around, I think it’s very, very helpful,” said Giuliani. “I think you can get a great deal done.”

Rudy Giuliani went on the attack against Gov. Paterson and his fellow Democratic leaders Monday night, saying they should be “ashamed” about New York’s failing economy.

“The governor, all the statewide officials, the legislators should be ashamed anytime we’re in a very low position, in an anti-competitive position,” Giuliani told Republicans at the Albany GOP’s annual Lincoln-Reagan Day Dinner. “Because we don’t have to be if we follow the right policies.”

Giuliani, who continues to be coy about whether he will challenge Paterson in 2010, touted his record as a fiscally responsible tax cutter and said that what New York needs is a “Reagan reorganization.”

“Ronald Reagan did for the federal government what needs to be done for the state,” Giuliani said. “He cut spending. He made government efficient.”

A Siena New York poll released Monday showed Giuliani beating Paterson, 56 to 29, in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup.

Earlier in the day, Giuliani held a private meeting at the state Capitol with the Senate Republicans. He said he praised them for sticking together to vote against the budget deal Paterson struck with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, and encouraged them to keep it up.

Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was back in New York today at a meeting of the State District Attorney Association.

The former United States attorney’s address touched on the struggling economy and term limits.

Giuliani also discussed Governor David Paterson’s pick to fill Hillary Clinton’s open Senate seat. He says the rumors surrounding Caroline Kennedy’s withdrawal from the race are unfair.

“It’s one of the most unfortunate parts of public life and public office,” he said. “I think Caroline Kennedy is one of New York City’s most distinguished citizens and I think it remains that way.”

Giuliani would not comment on Gillibrand, but says he’s backing Republican Congressman Peter King of Long Island in the 2010 special election for the seat.

Rudy Giuliani told CNN Sunday the failure of his presidential bid this year didn’t mark the end of his political career — and that his future could include another White House run.

The former New York City mayor said that the economic environment this year may have presented too big an obstacle for any Republican presidential hopeful to overcome.

“If you had told me a year ago we would have a major economic crisis, I would’ve told you it would be very hard for any Republican,” he said.

He wouldn’t rule out another run for the top spot. “No one knows whether you’ll do something again until you come to the point of: ‘Is it possible to do it again? Would you have a chance of winning?’ I mean, those are just things you can’t evaluate right now,” Giuliani said during a question-and-answer session with CNN International’s Hala Gourani.

Giuliani also wouldn’t rule out the the idea of serving in an Obama administration, though he said it was “unlikely” to happen.

“You never answer questions like that hypothetically,” he said. “Very few people ever turn the president down, but that’s an unrealistic situation.”

Giuliani also left open the prospect of a run for New York governor against Democrat David Paterson. “I don’t know if I’d be interested in it,” he said, when asked about the possibility of a gubernatorial bid. “But I’ll think about it when the right time comes along.”

Paterson, who took over as governor after Eliot Spitzer’s resignation, is planning a run in his own right in two years.
