Since becoming New York City’s transportation commissioner in 2007, has crisscrossed the globe, visiting far-flung locales like Bogotá, Copenhagen and Beijing.

In the process, she has run up a travel bill of about $35,000, according to city records. And in some cases, Ms. Sadik-Khan has allowed outsiders, including transportation advocacy groups, to help foot the bill.

City records obtained by The New York Times show that such groups have paid for $10,200 of her travel. The costs include transportation, lodging and food.

In April, for example, Walk and Bike for Life, which describes itself as an “advocate for walk and bike promotion,” paid for Ms. Sadik-Khan to travel to Toronto, where she met with local government officials. The records show that while there she discussed “planning for pedestrians.”

“We assumed all the cost,” said Guillermo Penalosa, the group’s executive director, who declared the $475 trip a success.
