Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz got slapped with a $20,000 fine Monday for bringing his wife on several free trips abroad.
The city’s Conflicts of Interest Board fined Markowitz for taking his wife on trips to Turkey in 2007 and 2009 and to the Netherlands, also in 2009, despite having been told he had to pay for her expenses.
Markowitz said the trips were paid for and requested by the foreign countries and added that it’s protocol to bring one’s spouse.

That isnt right at all. Being in the governmental position he is in Mr.Markowitz shouldn’t be fined for his wife’s expenses. Going to different meetings around the world with his wife is irrelevant to what he is being charged with. With all due respect if he went with her or didn’t go with her it would be the same price excluding food which I’m sure was paid out of his pocket. Couples sleep in the same bed and share the same room on a vacation or trip. Therefore I don’t understand why this independent man is being charged 20,000 dollars for bringing the love of his life on a trip that would have been the same price if she didn’t attend. I can also assure you that the flights didn’t cost over 20,000 for one individual to go to those countries either. This is just another way for the newspaper to humiliate and put a bad reputation for a man who is probably trying to get ahead in his life. This fine isn’t justified and I hope that I am not the only one that doesn’t see this.
