A relative of two New York City politicians has pleaded guilty to charges that he embezzled $115,000 from a taxpayer-funded nonprofit group, then shared some of the ill-gotten gains with his lawmaking kin.
Richard Izquierdo-Arroyo is the grandson of New York Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo and the nephew of City Council member Maria del Carmen Arroyo.
Prosecutors say he used some of the stolen money to put new flooring in his grandmother’s district office and donated thousands of dollars to her campaign.
He used more skimmed cash to hire interns for both his grandmother and his aunt and also bought them expensive plane tickets.
Neither lawmaker has been charged.
Arroyo entered his guilty plea at a federal court in Manhattan.
Prosecutors say he also spent tens of thousands of dollars on himself.
