The Triple Crown will have its last jewel this year, despite belt-tightening at the New York Racing Association.
NYRA’s board of directors voted yesterday to hold the 141st edition of the Belmont Stakes this spring.
The agency’s president had warned earlier this year that the event might have to be canceled because of budget cuts.
However, NYRA is cutting down its schedule this year – eliminating five big-money stakes races at Belmont Park and one at Saratoga.
Belmont’s purses are also expected to shrink by 13 percent this year.
NYRA’s other proposals to save money are being held up in Albany.
A proposal to install slot machines at Aqueduct Racetrack is being investigated by the state inspector general and legislators cannot agree on a plan to overhaul New York City’s Off Track Betting Corporation.
