David Greenfield, who’s running in a special election to replace outgoing City Councilman Simcha Felder in Brooklyn, has picked up Mayor Ed Koch’s backing – support that could be a boost in the heavily-Jewish district.
“I began my career in the City Council, and I know the kind of person it takes to do the job right,” Koch, who started out in the Council himself before becoming a congressman – and then a three-term mayor – said in a statement.

Greenfield, the executive vice president of the Sephardic Community Federation, was the first declared candidate, but he’s not the only one. Longtime local government official Joe Lazar is running – but Civil Court Judge Noach Dear, who was forced from the seat afte rnearly 20 years by term limits in 2001, is widely believed to be eyeing it himself.
