A cooling-off period has extended the deadline for a threatened strike by the largest union at the Indian Point nuclear power plant.
Negotiations went past the midnight Sunday deadline. Plant owner Entergy Nuclear and the Utility Workers Union of America have agreed to a federal mediator’s request to reconvene Wednesday. The new strike deadline is midnight Wednesday.
The union represents 433 workers at the plant in New York City’s northern suburbs. They range from maintenance people to reactor operators. Entergy says managers will run Indian Point’s two reactors if there is a strike.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said managers are “shadowing” union workers to be prepared. NRC inspectors were overseeing operations to ensure safety.
