Charles Schumer is meeting today with members of the Bannerman Castle Trust and local officials for a briefing on how to prevent the rest of the landmark on a Hudson River island from collapsing.
He says he’ll ask the federal Department of the Interior to back the trust’s application for funding under the Save America’s Treasures program and will also try to find other emergency funding.
Sections of walls have collapsed, some as recently as last month, as the trust works to raise money to stabilize the site.
Manhattan merchant Francis Bannerman VI built the structure in the early 1900s near Fishkill and used it to store military relics. The state has owned the property since the 1960s.
