The MTA has gone 2.0, launching an overhauled Web site Wednesday for the first time in seven years.

“Score one for the MTA,” said Gene Russianoff, of the Straphangers Campaign.

The site, mta.info, was designed in-house and is far improved, including:

• A trip planner and real-time service alerts on the homepage

• Data freely available to developers looking to create mobile applications

• Customized schedules, maps and service alerts for mobile devices

• Links to Facebook for those clamoring to be the MTA’s friend

“It should be clear today that the MTA is committed to doing a better job communicating with our customers,” said MTA CEO Jay Walder, who pledged to improve the Web site when he took over in October.

The MTA is also working on making the site easily compatible with smart phones.

The current site gets more than 16 million hits on a busy day, according to the MTA. The new site took about two months to build.
