The Manhattan district attorney is looking into allegations the city’s former police commissioner drove off after knowingly hitting a pregnant woman with his car.
Howard Safir hit a woman while backing up his car on the Upper East Side on Friday.
Current Commissioner Ray Kelly says he did not consider the incident a criminal matter, since detectives determined Safir did not realize he had hit anyone.
But the victim, who was not seriously hurt, says she and a passenger in Safir’s sports utility vehicle told him he had hit her.
Safir, who served as police commissioner from 1996 to 2000, has yet to comment on the incident.
