Unlike the streets near the United Nations, most streets in the city are not considered international territory; on those, alternate-side parking rules apply. Still, many foreign diplomats simply park where they please, and they have collectively ignored $18 million worth of the bright orange rectangles stuffed under their windshield wipers.
You could not begin to hide those tickets in one glove compartment.
Representative Anthony D. Weiner will propose legislation this week that would capitalize on delinquent drivers.
“It’s insulting to all New Yorkers that countries like Yemen, Zimbabwe and Iran owe the city millions in unpaid parking tickets,” Mr. Weiner said. “Diplomats park illegally, ignore paying their parking tickets and expect New Yorkers to pick up the tab. This needs to end.”
