Sources tell NY1 Democrat Jose Peralta is expected to announce his candidacy today.
The Queens Democratic Party is expected to throw its support behind Peralta. It’s an unusual move considering Peralta would have to take on the incumbent Monserrate in a primary.
Numerous Democrats have urged Monserrate to step down following his conviction on misdemeanor assault charges.
A bipartisan State Senate committee is beginning an inquiry later this year.
