Queens Senator Hiram Monserrate said in a statement today that he will cooperate fully with the legislative committee that will decide whether he should remain in the State Senate.
Monserrate was convicted on a misdemeanor charge of injuring girlfriend Karla Giraldo but acquitted of all felony charges.
Sources tell NY1 that Senate Majority Conference Leader John Sampson will announce a special committee Tuesday to investigate how to proceed with Monserrate. The committee is expected to consist of five Democrats and four Republicans.
Meanwhile, calls for Monserrate’s resignation continue to grow.
Senators Charles Schumer said in a statement Monday that Monserrate’s resignation would be “the right thing for the State of New York, the State Senate, and his constituents.”
Gillibrand went further in her statement and said that if Monserrate does not resign, the State Senate should move to expel him.
Monserrate faces up to a year in prison. He is set to be sentenced on December 4.
