A judge today found State Senator Hiram Monserrate not guilty on two counts of felony assault in connection with an incident last December where his girlfriend was injured.
The Queens lawmaker was found guilty of a reckless endangerment charge, which is a misdemeanor and carries no jail time and no immediate loss of his State Senate seat.
Monserrate was accused of slashing his girlfriend Karla Giraldo in the face with a broken glass.
Earlier this week, hospital employees testified his girlfriend told them Monserrate attacked her. But both Monserrate and Giraldo say she was cut accidentally when the lawmaker tripped while bringing her a glass of water.
Monserrate’s lawyer also had an explanation for the couple’s behavior seen in surveillance video right after the alleged attack. He says Monserrate was not violent with Giraldo, but was just trying to get the drunken woman to go the hospital when she did not want to go.
