Posted by Gov. David Paterson is vetoing a series of bills approved by lawmakers for spending back in their home districts. Paterson says the state can’t afford them.
He’s vetoing bills that would let several school districts delay repaying surplus state aid resulting from errors made by the districts. Other bills would advance millions of dollars in aid to Syracuse and Rochester a year early. He says the schools and cities haven’t proved hardship that qualifies them for the measures.
Paterson is also vetoing a bill that would create a commission to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. He says the panel could cost more than $2 million.
The Legislature could try to override the vetoes.
The state faces a $2.1 billion deficit Paterson wants to address in September.
