The race among Democrats to succeed Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo is on, even though Mr. Cuomo has not yet said he plans to vacate his post.
This week, Eric R. Dinallo, the former state insurance superintendent, has filed with the state Board of Elections to open a campaign account, Dinallo for Attorney General. Mr. Dinallo, who was once a top lieutenant of Eliot Spitzer, is betting that the party’s conventional wisdom will come to fruition — that Mr. Cuomo will seek the governorship in 2010 as David A. Paterson continues to struggle in public opinion polls.
Mr. Dinallo is among a crowded field of Democrats weighing runs for attorney general with the expectation that Mr. Cuomo will enter the governor’s race.

Let the ugliness of campaigning begin! I wish him the best of luck against David A. Paterson, I think he’s got a chance.
