Former Gov. Mario M. Cuomo rarely plays the endorsement game when it comes to Democratic primaries. In fact, he can’t remember the last time he endorsed a candidate for a New York City race. But on Wednesday, he threw his weight to the race for public advocate on behalf of someone he and his son, Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, like a lot: City Councilman Bill de Blasio.
The endorsement is sure to be seen as a snub of the front-runner in the race, Mark Green, the former public advocate. And though Mr. Cuomo noted in an interview that he backed Mr. Green for mayor in 2001 in his race against Michael R. Bloomberg, he did not mince words that the nasty 2006 primary between his son and Mr. Green for attorney general was a factor.
