Despite a hiring freeze, Gov. Paterson hired a longtime friend who recently partied with him at a hot Manhattan club, the Daily News has learned.
Gabrielle Turner was hired July 20 as an $88,000-a-year deputy director for state and federal affairs in the Washington, D.C., office.
Turner and Paterson were photographed together 10 days later at the swanky Taj on W. 21st St. at a birthday bash for Rhonda Cowan, a vice president for music at BET Interactive.
Paterson spokeswoman Marissa Shorenstein said Turner and Cowan are cousins and Cowan and the governor are friends.
Paterson took heat for staying at the party until 1 a.m. the night before his office delivered more bad budget news.
Turner was hired to fill a “critical” vacancy in the six-person D.C. office, Shorenstein said.
As deputy director for state and federal affairs, Turner is a liaison to the state congressional delegation and with Washington-based interest groups and associates.
She also monitors legislative and administrative actions that may affect the state, and supervises legislative functions and projects of the office.
