New Bill Could Override State’s Gun Laws

Senator Charles Schumer says he’s fighting a piece of legislation that would override New York state’s tough conceal and carry gun law.

At a news conference yesterday, Schumer said the measure, which was introduced by South Dakota Senator John Thune, would force communities to let people from other states where concealed weapons are legal carry them into states with tougher gun laws.

Schumer says the bill would allow someone to go to another state, get a license to conceal a gun, and then come back with it – putting New Yorkers’ safety at risk.

“Right now you walk down the streets in New York or Nassau County or Westchester County, you can have the solace of knowing that if someone has a gun on them, they’ve gone through a rigorous background check,” Schumer said. “After this law, you can have no such comfort.”

Schumer says the legislation could be passed by the Senate as early as this week.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has been outspoken about tougher gun laws, released a statement saying, “This misguided proposal would destroy the concealed carry and illegal possession laws crafted by dozens of states. This bill would frustrate the efforts of police and encourage the activities of illegal gun traffickers.”

Since gun permits are only issued to those residents of thsoe state the argument that people of states where gun permits are hard to get will go to other states to get permits is an attempt to divert attention. Those gun owners who have premits have been shown statistically to be more law abiding than the general population. It seems odd that anyone would oppose more law abiding visitors in their state or city, Must be something else…

Down with Chucky! People that carry concealed are just trying to protect themselves and their loved ones. Guns are not the problem. Do you think that the convicted felon really cares if hes ALLOWED to have a gun on him? Heck no! But maybe… just maybe, he might think twice about holding up the quickie mart if he thinks some red-blooded American eating some nachos in the corner may be carrying a handgun.
