A former New York City councilman is due in federal court. Prosecutors have signaled he could plead guilty to unspecified charges in a corruption investigation.
Miguel Martinez resigned Tuesday in a one-line letter to the council speaker.
The court hearing is set for Thursday morning.
On Monday, federal prosecutors notified the court they intended to bring charges against Martinez by filing a legal document that usually indicates a plea deal is in the works.
The move also suggested Martinez could be cooperating in a probe of the council’s once-hidden “reserve funds” practice. That involved stashing away millions of dollars for nonprofit groups and pet projects.
Martinez represents parts of northern Manhattan. He was elected to the 51-member council in 2001.
