A spokeswoman for the New York Democrat said Sunday that he is engaged to Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The spokeswoman said the 44-year-old Weiner proposed to Abedin on May 23. No wedding date has been set.

Weiner ran for New York City mayor in 2005 and planned to run again this year. He backed away from the race in May, after billionaire incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg persuaded the City Council to change the city’s term limits so he could seek a third term. Bloomberg is an independent.

Weiner represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens.
