A federal judge set Oct. 19 as the start date of Nassau Legis. Roger Corbin’s trial on charges of evading income taxes on $225,000 he received from a developer, despite pleas from his defense attorney for more preparation time.
The starting date could put the trial – which both defense and prosecutors say could last one to two weeks – in the final days of Corbin’s re-election campaign, if he can win a Sept. 9 Democratic primary for the legislative seat he has held for 14 years.
U.S. District Court Justice Sandra J. Feuerstein set the trial date and said that Corbin’s re-election bid was not an issue to be considered. She said her concern was giving the lawmaker a speedy trial.
Thomas Liotti, Corbin’s attorney, had asked that the trial be put off until early December and warned that he may ask for an adjournment as the trial date nears, a request the judge said she would weigh.
