For the first time in 19 years, welfare recipients in New York state will see their checks go up.
The increase was approved in the state’s new budget and begins this month. Advocates for the poor say the hike is long overdue.
For a typical family of three, the total goes from $291 a month to $321, a difference of $30. For a family of four, it goes from
$375.70 a month to $413.70, a difference of $38.
The subsidy also will increase incrementally in 2010 and 2011.
