It appears Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will face a serious primary challenge for her Senate seat.
Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney has decided to take on Gillibrand in the 2010 Democratic primary, according to Paul Blank, who will serve as a senior adviser to Maloney’s campaign.
Democratic leaders have been trying to clear the field of challengers to Gillibrand, who was appointed by Governor David Paterson to take over Hillary Clinton’s vacated seat.
President Barack Obama persuaded Long Island Congressman Steve Israel not to enter the Senate race.
Maloney, who has served in Congress since 1993 for Manhattan’s East Side and some of Queens, is expected to make an official announcement in two weeks.
