Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau is endorsing Cyrus Vance Jr. as his would-be successor. The race is shaping up to be more competitive than the one for New York City mayor.

Vance’s father is the former U.S. secretary of state. Caroline Kennedy appeared Tuesday at a Vance fundraiser. It was Kennedy’s first foray into politics since she was considered for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Senate seat.

Also running are former state Supreme Court Justice Leslie Crocker Snyder and former Assistant District Attorney Richard Aborn.

Morgenthau’s top aide, Daniel Castleman, quit after learning the D.A. wouldn’t endorse him. He later changed his mind about running. Castleman previously was an adviser and actor on the HBO TV hit “The Sopranos.”
