Federal prosecutors say two former New York City Council aides have agreed to plead guilty to charges stemming from the investigation of a council slush fund.
Authorities say they took advantage of a long-standing council practice known as “discretionary grants,” which funneled millions of taxpayer dollars to pet projects.
Asquith Reid and Joycinth Anderson were accused of embezzling nearly $195,000 from three community groups.
Anderson’s lawyer told The New York Times she plans to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. Reid’s lawyer declined to discuss the specifics of his expected plea.
Under the council practice, money held in “reserve funds” was doled out later in the year. Sometimes fake organizations were listed in the budget to hold the money.
