The race for city controller turned mean Tuesday as candidates accused each other of inflating credentials, flip-flopping and changing campaigns like underwear.
Since the four City Council members running in one of the city’s most competitive races have similar positions on the pensions, audits and fiscal policies that comprise the controller’s job, a debate hosted by City Hall newspaper centered on who really wants to be controller – and who just wants to be elected.
“I emphatically see the controller job, not as a steppingstone but an unbelievable opportunity to change city policy,” said City Councilman David Yassky (D-Brooklyn).
Councilman John Liu (D-Queens) scoffed that Yassky recently ran for Congress and Brooklyn district attorney.
“Dave, you’ve got to admit that this is like the fifth office you’ve run for in a number of years,” Liu said.
