State lawmakers are hoping shame will force tax offenders to pay their fair share.
Bronx Senator Jeff Klein and Brooklyn Assemblyman William Colton want delinquent individuals and businesses placed on a so-called “Public Shame List” that would be posted online.
Those on the list will be allowed to repay their debt as part of a tax amnesty program without extra fees or interest rates.
The state will notify individuals and businesses before the list is published and give them a chance to dispute any claims.
Lawmakers believe the initiative could bring in close to $250 million in unpaid taxes.
