A new report by the state Department of Public Service shows that New York City will need a new area code, and soon.

The report indicates that phone numbers for the 718 and 347 area codes, which include all boroughs but Manhattan, will run out by late 2011.

Officials must now decide whether to create a new area code for the four-borough group or whether to create an area code that encompasses all five boroughs.

Manhattan, which uses the 212 and 646 area codes, is expected to run out of phone numbers by 2014.

A new area code covering four boroughs would last until 2021. A new area code across five boroughs would last until 2017.

The public is invited to share their opinion by e-mailing secretary@dps.state.ny.us or by calling 800-335-2120 by May 29
