An education council approves major changes to the landscape of public schools on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
A proposal to redraw district lines determining where some kids get to go to school was passed Wednesday night by a city educational council.
The changes are part of a Department of Education plan to reduce overcrowding in some schools and fill empty seats in others.
“Obviously what’s happened on the West Side is the population has grown,” said Schools Chancellor Joel Klein. “A lot of people want to go to one particular school, but we can’t put them all at that school. So we have got to do what’s fair and best for all the kids. That’s our job.”
As a result of the vote, Center School, which is currently housed at P.S. 199, will be moved to the building that houses P.S. 9 at 84th and Columbus.
The Anderson School, which was housed in the P.S. 9 building, will be relocated to the M.S. 44 complex on 77th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus.
The changes would go into effect for the 2010-11 school year.
