City Councilman David Yassky and Comptroller Bill Thompson yesterday filed emergency papers asking a Brooklyn judge to stop the city’s plans to put the long-unused Brooklyn House of Detention back into operation.
The House of Detention on Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill has been closed since 2003, although it’s still used as a processing facility, the Department of Correction said.
“At a moment of financial crisis, this city is purposely leaving the public out of a decision to build a jail we don’t need at a time that we can’t afford it,” Thompson said.
“We are confident that the courts will recognize this unacceptable breach of the public trust, and move to prevent this $440 million boondoggle from moving forward.”
A hearing has been set for Thursday.
