Gov. David Paterson has signed a bill to allow New York City to build a recycling center and environmental education center in a Manhattan park on the Hudson River.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a statement on Monday afternoon thanking Paterson for signing the legislation, which lets a plan to build a marine transfer station on a former pier at the edge of Greenwich Village go forward.
The station will be used as a transfer point for recyclable paper, metal, glass and plastic generated in Manhattan. The station will not handle any municipal solid waste or commercial trash.
The mayor estimates that the new transfer station will eliminate nearly 6 million miles of Sanitation Department truck trips a year throughout the city.
