Mayor Bloomberg warns against reversing school system
July 18, 2008
Mayor Bloomberg warned yesterday that any effort to take control of the school system away from his successors would reverse major gains in education.
“We cannot go back to the old days when the school system was run for the people who work in it and there was no accountability,” Bloomberg said at Capitol Hill.
“We have an obligation to go out and work very hard over the next year to make sure that the parents of our schoolchildren . . . that the average citizen calls their legislators and says, ‘You will not stop this progress.’ ”
Bloomberg testified before the House Committee on Education and Labor that the city has narrowed the racial gap in student performance.
