Former Assemblyman Bob Straniere to Run for Fossella’s seat
July 15, 2008
Staten Island GOP leaders last night picked former Assemblyman Bob Straniere to run for the congressional seat held by scandal-scarred Vito Fossella.
A committee voted, 4 to 1, for Straniere.
The Republicans originally tapped MTA board member Frank Powers to run; he died of a heart attack last month.
The sole dissenting vote against Straniere came from Joe Borelli, the chief of staff to City Councilman Vincent Ignizio, who unseated Straniere in a 2004 Assembly primary.
Fossella announced he would not seek re-election after being arrested for drunken driving and admitting he had fathered a love child.
