Potential Molinaro foe surfaces
July 8, 2008
A field once crowded with potential candidates willing to take on incumbent Assemblyman Marc Molinaro for the 103rd state Assembly seat has disappeared, but a new candidate has stepped forward to fill the void.
Red Hook resident Anne Rubin has offered herself up to the Democratic Party as an opponent to Molinaro, R-Red Hook.
Molinaro is running for third term in office.
Rubin, who is a registered Greene Party voter, entered the race after three Democratic contenders for the Democratic Party line dropped out.
Joseph Huff of Union Vale, Laurette Giardino of Hopewell Junction, and Dana Tompkins of Millbrook, had announced their candidacies for the seat, but subsequently withdrew from the race.
Rubin has until Thursday to submit to the Dutchess County Board of Elections petitions signed by at least 500 Democrats in the two counties designating her as the Democratic candidate in the November election.
Because she is not a registered Democrat, she also needs the authorization of the Democratic committees of both Dutchess and Columbia counties.
Rubin could not be reached for comment Monday.
According to a campaign Web site, Rubin moved to the Hudson Valley in 1975 and currently live in the village of Red Hook with her husband, Charlie. and two children, Samala and RJ.
She is a member of the Red hook Conservation Advisory Council and the Zoning Review Committee.
“I’ve made my home here and decided to raise my children here. But the economic realities of the Hudson Valley in the 1970s no longer exist,” Rubin said in a statement on her Web site. “We need to move beyond the old ways of doing business. We need to work together to keep our farm towns alive, to keep our communities vibrant and to maintain a Hudson Valley that our children will not only love, but can afford to call home.”
According to the Web site, Rubin supports property tax reforms, improving the state’s economic base, protecting the environment, and transparency in government.
A former two-term Dutchess County legislator and Tivoli mayor for more than a decade, Molinaro was elected to the state Assembly in 2006.
He said he is proud of his record of accomplishment in the state Assembly and believes he has “displayed the ability to work across party lines” to get things done.
Molinaro lives in the village of Red Hook with his wife, Christy, and their daughter, Abigail.
The 103rd Assembly District comprises 12 Dutchess County towns, including the Northern Dutchess communities of Red Hook, Milan and Pine Plains, as well as nine Columbia County towns and the city of Hudson.
Designating petitions for all races this November are due to the Board of Elections by the close of business Thursday.
