Panel kills bill for city bus lane cameras
June 19, 2008
In another blow to Mayor Bloomberg’s push to ease congestion on city streets, a bill to allow bus lane cameras died in an Assembly committee Tuesday.
“Gridlock will not simply disappear on its own,” frustrated Bloomberg spokesman Farrell Sklerov said.
The bill to create a network of cameras to catch cars illegally using special bus lanes was held in the Assembly Transportation Committee at the urging of Chairman David Gantt (D-Rochester).
“For now, it’s dead,” Gantt told the Daily News. Gantt initially wouldn’t give a reason for blocking the bill that would authorize the cameras to be installed citywide on up to 50 miles of lanes designated as part of a rapid transit bus program.
The upstate Democrat who has over the years blocked the city’s attempts for more red light cameras has come under fire recently for sponsoring a red light camera bill that is tailored specifically to benefit the company of a close friend and former aide.
