State Takeover In The Works For OTB
June 13, 2008
A state takeover is in the works for the city’s Off-Track Betting Corporation.
Governor David Paterson is set to make an announcement this afternoon, which will likely involve the appointment of Queens State Senator John Sabini to run the state’s Racing and Wagering Board.
Part of Sabini’s responsibilities could be the state’s assumption of control of more than 60 OTB parlors across the city.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is threatening to close the parlors by Sunday unless a funding formula with the state is changed.
A City Hall source tells NY1 that the agreement has not been finalized, saying, “we are hopeful for a deal, but there is no deal.”
The appointment would also clear the way for City Councilman Hiram Monserrate, who is challenging Sabini for his job.
