Democrats Endorse John Degnan a GOP candidate
June 13, 2008
Democratic Party leaders from northern Westchester gave Republican John Degnan another endorsement in his bid for the Assembly.
Somers Democratic Committee Chairwoman Christine Robbins said Degnan’s party affiliation didn’t matter. She said he is the best candidate to unseat Assemblyman Greg Ball, R-Patterson.
The endorsement comes almost a week after the Putnam County Democratic Committee voted to endorse Degnan, a former Brewster mayor and trustee who ran unsuccessfully for Southeast supervisor last year. Degnan last month announced his candidacy against Ball, who is seeking a second two-year term.
Degnan also has been endorsed by the Putnam GOP committee and Ball by the Westchester Republicans. They split the support of the Pawling Republicans in Dutchess County.
The 99th District covers the towns of Patterson, Southeast and Carmel in Putnam County; North Salem, Somers and Yorktown in Westchester; and Pawling in Dutchess County. Degnan has also been endorsed by the Putnam County Republican Committee. The Westchester GOP backed Ball. The two men split the votes of the Pawling Republicans.
Degnan said this year was an opportunity for voters to return “real leadership and service” to the district.
Ball said he will continue fighting “for lower taxes, real reforms like term limits and cracking down on criminal illegal aliens.”
“My opponent is a puppet of those who fear real change in Albany,” Ball said. “The Assembly doesn’t need another rubber stamp or empty suit. The people are being abused by a dysfunctional government, yet because of my passion, and persistence, finally have a real voice against the insiders.”
When asked who is controlling Degnan, Ball described “Putnam County insiders who are responsible for our constant tax increases, patronage jobs and backroom deals.” He added Degnan would be “another rubber stamp” for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat. Degnan scoffed at that assertion.
“I’m there to represent the people to the best of my ability because that’s what my record states,” Degnan said.
