City Comptroller Wants United Nations’s Unpaid Rent Money
May 30, 2008
The mayor’s budget could see a boost in funding if the city comptroller gets a United Nations company to pay unpaid rent.
Comptroller William Thompson announced Thursday he is going after the United Nations Development Corporation, saying it owes the city more than $6 million in unpaid rent.
The company provides office and residential space for United Nations personnel.
Thompson said a recent audit found UNDC owed $12 million in rent dating back to 2005.
The corporation has since paid half of the amount due, and now Thompson says he wants the rest.
“Funds of this magnitude shouldn’t be taken lightly especially considering the current economic environment,” said Thompson. “At a time when the city is considering cutting its budget for education, senior services and other critically important services, we can’t afford to leave these dollars on the table.”
Thompson called on the City Economic Development Corporation to collect the outstanding rent.
In a statement released late Thursday, UNDC denied owing any additional payments.
The company said in the past 15 years it has paid more than $170 million dollars to the city in additional rent payments.
