Donald Hobel announces bid for Maziarz’s seat
May 29, 2008
Donald G. Hobel, a Conservative Party member best known as a frequent critic of the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency, announced Wednesday that he is running for the 62nd District State Senate seat currently occupied by State Sen. George
D. Maziarz, R-Newfane. Hobel, 78, has run for office in the
past, including races for 6th District county legislator in 2005 and 2007 — he narrowly lost in the Conservative primary on both occasions.
This time, he said he will pursue the Democratic endorsement as well as the Conservative line. The district covers all of Niagara County except Niagara Falls, all of Orleans County and a chunk of Monroe County.
Hobel said he favors open government and term limits, but he described himself first and foremost as “an ardent proponent of IDA reform.” He said all IDA tax breaks should be voted upon by elected officials of the host municipality.
“It’s called constitutional representative government,” said Hobel, a retired Dunlop engineer who earned a Purple Heart in the Korean War as a member of the Army.
