The Department of Buildings said yesterday that it is easing up on a policy put in place after the crane collapse two months ago.
In response to the deadly accident on the east side of Manhattan, the DOB had required inspectors be present when cranes are moved at building sites.
Now, the department says it does not have to be on site, although contractors must notify the city and hold safety meetings before raising, lowering, or heightening a crane.
The department will also conduct random inspections at sites.
Earlier this month, the city announced it was spending more than $5 million to hire 63 new inspectors — bringing the total number of buildings inspectors to 461.
