Curtis Sliwa says he might run for Vito Fossella’s Congressional seat
May 29, 2008
With Republicans struggling to find a replacement for the disgraced Rep. Vito Fossella, Curtis Sliwa thinks he may have found the GOP’s perfect angel - himself.
The WABC radio talk show host and Guardian Angels founder said Wednesday he’d be willing to run for the 13th Congressional District seat - which covers Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn - if no one from the district steps forward.
Fossella announced last week he won’t run again after revelations he fathered a child with his lover in Virginia while maintaining a wife and three children on Staten Island.
“I can be the fail-safe guy,” Sliwa told the Daily News, a day after he made his willingness clear in a letter to Staten Island GOP Chairman John Friscia.
Local Republican leaders said a Sliwa bid was worth considering - provided the straight-talking, beret-wearing radio host isn’t just trying to boost his ratings.
“The political junkie in me is intrigued by it,” said City Councilman James Oddo (R-S.I.). “But it allcomes down to, Is Curtis serious?”
Meanwhile, the Staten Island Democratic Committee last night gave its blessing for the race to local City Councilman Michael McMahon.
“He’s it,” said a top Democrat.
The committee tapped the Staten Islander, who is due to be term-limited next year, instead of Brooklynite Stephen Harrison at its convention.
McMahon also won the backing of Brooklyn Democratic leader Vito Lopez.
