Rensselaer Democrats Endorse Brian Premo
May 23, 2008
The Rensselaer County Democratic Committee endorsed attorney Brian Premo to run against Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno, R-Brunswick.
During an hour-long session followed by a candidates forum, committee members gathered at the American Legion hall on Main Avenue to endorse candidates for the fall elections, Chairman Tom Wade said.
The committee threw its support to incumbent U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Greenport, who seeks a second term representing the 20th Congressional District. No endorsement was made in the hotly contested 21st District, where eight candidates are vying for the Democratic line in the race to succeed U.S. Rep. Michael McNulty, D-Green Island, who announced his retirement last year.
Seven of the candidates stayed for a forum afterward, Wade said. “It was engaging, and a lot of people stayed for it.”
“I chose not to endorse any of the candidates because I want to have an open system for the committee people to support the candidate of their choice,” Wade said. “They can carry a petition for any candidate without any hard feelings.”
He said he did not plan to make any endorsement in the race before the election.
