Ex-congressman seeks to challenge John Hall

May 23, 2008

Former Republican U.S. Rep. Joseph DioGuardi is the latest to announce that he wants to challenge incumbent Rep. John Hall, D-Dover Plains, this November.

DioGuardi, who served in Congress from 1985 to 1989, has sent a letter to all 1,100 Republican committee people in the five-county 19th Congressional District announcing that he is a candidate.

Two other Republicans want to challenge Hall - Kieran Lalor and Westchester County Legislator George Oros.

DioGuardi said he will not officially announce his candidacy until all five county committees endorse him as their candidate.

To demonstrate his seriousness about running and “to hit the ground running,” he said he has contributed $50,000 and loaned another $300,000 to his campaign. “I have been in touch with top-flight finance people across the nation to begin the process of collecting the resources to bring a winning message to the people of New York’s 19th Congressional District,” he said.

DioGuardi said when he served in the house, the Republican Party “did nothing to reign in out-of-control, wasteful spending and was punished for it at the ballot box in 2006.” Now, he said, “Congress, under speaker Pelosi and incumbent John Hall, has made the problems worse.”
