Controller Thompson opted for Ireland trip over divorce court appearance

City Controller William Thompson was enjoying shepherd’s pie in Ireland while his ex-wife stewed over their divorce Friday in a Brooklyn courtroom.

Thompson’s choice to skip a court hearing with his ex, Sylvia Kinard-Thompson, and attend an overseas economic conference meant they could not settle their differences over a piece of furniture.

“I have an issue with Mr. Thompson not being present,” she told a judge. “The idea that because he is a public official he is somehow not responsible to the laws of this state [is] unreasonable.”

“I read in the paper where Mr. Thompson is currently in Ireland,” Judicial Hearing Officer Milton Platt said, noting that nothing could be finalized without Thompson.

Thompson, a mayoral wanna-be, was fulfilling his “fiduciary responsibility” to the city, lawyer Saul Edelstein said.

“I unfortunately didn’t check [the court date] out with my client. I should have,” he said, noting that he tried to change the date afterward, but Kinard- Thompson refused.

Thompson’s absence didn’t stop the rancor between his ex and Edelstein, who last month said in front of a Daily News reporter that she was “crazy as a loon” and “my client’s not too smart, either.”

The couple divorced two years ago but still have to settle over a credenza and Kinard-Thompson’s claims she was locked out of their home and unable to get important documents.

Platt set a June 6 continuance, and both sides agreed to try to settle the issue by then.
