City To Begin Enforcing Calorie Posting

May 5, 2008

Starting today, the Health Department says it will write out violation notices to chain restaurants not in compliance with the city’s new calorie posting regulation.

The city law requiring restaurants to post calorie counts on menus and menu boards took effect last Wednesday.

The rule has faced a number of legal challenges from the State Restaurant Association, and an appeal is still pending.

Restaurants will not be fined for non-compliance until July 18th. Those fines will range from $200 to $2,000, with penalty amounts increasing for repeat violations.

The Health Department says that calorie posting violations will not result in points assessed as part of routine sanitary inspections.
