Marty Markowitz hints at taking act to City Hall

May 2, 2008

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz may be setting his sights across the East River on City Hall.

Markowitz, who has been mum on whether he will run for mayor in 2009, raised eyebrows Tuesday when he left his home borough and reportedly told a Staten Island crowd, “The future of New York City depends on the future of Staten Island. … Should I decide to become a candidate, I look forward to working with you,” according to Crain’s Insider.

Markowitz Thursday downplayed his appearance at a Staten Island Development Corp. conference and remained coy.

“He still hasn’t decided,” a Markowitz spokesman said.

But in January, Brooklyn’s biggest cheerleader told the Daily News that if he ever took his show on the road, it would be a sign he’s in the race.

“Once you see me on a regular basis in Queens and Staten Island and the Bronx, and, yes, Manhattan, you can make an assumption that I’m off and running,” he said then.

Reminded of the remark Thursday, Markowitz smiled and asked, “Did I say that?”

Markowitz has chalked up his indecision to doubts over whether he has the drive to undertake such a grueling campaign and pressure-filled job.

Through January, Markowitz had raised $901,298, compared with $2,441,441 for Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan), $4,228,931 for city Controller William Thompson and $3,599,433 for U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn/Queens) - all potential mayoral candidates.

Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf said Markowitz’s Staten Island cameo was a sign - but added, “It’s all about the money.

“The more noises he makes outside Brooklyn the closer he seems to be running,” Sheinkopf said. “But the ultimate question is the same: Can he get the dough together?”
