Boxer Mesi to run for Buffalo-area state Senate seat
April 1, 2008
Boxer “Baby” Joe Mesi is ready to throw his hat into a different kind of ring.
Mesi plans to announce his candidacy for the state Senate on Saturday. The Tonawanda Democrat will run for the 61st District seat being vacated by Mary Lou Rath.
He named job creation as his top priority in an area that has struggled with economic and population declines.
Mesi was ranked in the top 10 before being diagnosed with brain bleeding following his decision over Vassiliy Jirov in March 2004. He did not fight for two years, but is 7-0 since returning in April 2006.
He recently withdrew from an April 4 fight against Terry “Hurricane” Smith because of a shoulder injury.
