City’s Calorie Labeling Law Is Pushed Back
March 28, 2008
The rule, which requires New York City restaurants that have 15 or more outlets nationwide to post calorie information on their menus, was scheduled to take effect March 31.
A legal challenge, filed by restaurant lobbyists, was expected to be resolved by then. Yesterday, the judge deciding the case indicated a decision would take longer. In a statement, the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said the agency entered into an agreement with the New York State Restaurant Association, and the department would not enforce the rule until April 15. The department said it would not fine restaurants until May 27, instead of May 12.
