Democrat Davis confirms he’ll run again for Congress
March 27, 2008
Industrialist and two-time Democratic nominee Jack Davis said Wednesday that he would seek to replace Rep. Thomas Reynolds in Congress.
Davis said his decision was based on a poll he commissioned in the 26th District that asked residents about jobs, the economy, immigration, the war in Iraq and Davis’ name recognition.
“I’ve created jobs; I’ve balanced budgets,” said Davis, who founded I Squared R Element in Akron, Erie County. “There’s nobody in Washington that’s created jobs.”
Davis favors getting out of Iraq and is opposed to open borders.
A self-made millionaire, Davis said he expected to spend $3 million of his own money. He is planning a formal announcement on April 15.
Davis is the third Democrat to enter the race.
“I’ve known Jack for years, and I welcome him into the race,” said retired lawyer Alice Kryzan, who is also seeking the Democratic nomination. “Jack brings a unique perspective into this race, and I look forward to him adding his voice to this debate.”
Iraq war veteran Jon Powers’ campaign was less generous.
“Jack Davis already failed twice to win this seat,” the Powers campaign said in a statement. “Western New Yorkers are looking for something different. They’re looking for a candidate who is actually listening to people from Buffalo to Rochester.”
Republicans do not have a candidate yet. Two of their top prospects, state Sen. George Maziarz of Newfane, Niagara County, and Assemblyman James Hayes of Amherst, Erie County, have declined to run.
“The Democrats have been preparing to run against Reynolds since the day after the election in 2006,” said Nick Langworthy, executive director of the Erie County Republican Committee. “We will have the best candidate, and we will win.”
Reynolds, a Republican from Clarence, Erie County, announced a week ago that he would not seek re-election to a sixth term.
Davis’ entry into the race had been expected by political observers. Davis has been seeking endorsements from town and county committees but so far has not been successful, losing each time to Powers.
Greece Democrats are voting tonight on which candidate to endorse, and their decision will have significant weight in determining which candidate will win support from the Monroe County Democratic organization.
Davis will be seeking that endorsement, along with Powers and Kryzan. All three Democrats live in Erie County.Source: Democrat and Chronicle
